One tonneau solar: Nanogrid for your ute

Worksport, known for its truck bed covers, has launched a new system that turns a truck bed into a mobile solar generator.

Called SOLIS and COR, is designed to provide off-grid power for internal combustion engine, plug-in hybrid and battery electric utes.

SOLIS is a foldable solar truck bed cover that can generate up to 650 watts of power while protecting your cargo from the elements. It’s designed to fit most major truck makes and models, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Ram, Jeep, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.

“Our test results show that the system can charge up to 45 iPhone 14s per hour, providing clean energy straight from the sun,” said Worksport CEO Steven Rossi.

Paired with SOLIS is COR, a portable battery storage system that boasts 11 outlets and delivers 2000 watts of power with a single battery capacity of 1.5kWh.

Extra batteries can be connected for a total capacity of up to 6kWh, enough to power various appliances and tools for hours.

“The COR and SOLIS system work as a powerful clean-tech nanogrid, generating a significant amount of power every hour,” explained Rossi.

Beyond the convenience of off-grid power, the system offers significant cost savings. Worksport estimates that electric and plug-in hybrid ute owners can save up to A$750 in fast-charger costs and gain more than 3200km in additional range each year.

“The potential is real to have hundreds of thousands of SOLIS units travelling the roads globally, representing the largest portable solar microgrid network in the world, all providing real-time data,” said Worksport CTO Rafael Oliveira.

Worksport is already producing pilot SOLIS units in its New York factory, with the COR battery system ready for launch.
